2.Watch Sumo Morning Practice at Stable in Tokyo

★★★★★★★★★★4.0 · 268 reviews · from $95

Meet your guide in Tokyo and enter a sumo stable for morning practice. Watch wrestlers stretch, warm up, drill, and spar from close range, then take photos with them if timing allows. The visit lasts 60 to 90 minutes most days, but tournament-season practice can be much shorter. Expect quiet observation and floor seating.

“It was sumo wrestlers practicing and warming up. As advertised. Interesting but unfortunately the tatami mat is thin and on top of a very hard floor. Was in a lot of pain sitting on the floor and had to leave after an hour. Only two chairs but a large group of people. Everyone around us looked in pain and was shuffling a lot. Not worth 2 hours of time for that level of discomfort. Could benefit from a thicker tatami mat or more chairs.”

We were happy that our guide Ishida reviewed the basic rules of the game beforehand and taught us about the life of a wrestler while living at the stable. By the end of the practice, we had a good understanding of the hard work involved for each wrestler and of the respect they have of the coaches and for each other. We appreciated being able to take pictures while there. Thank you Ishida. You are very friendly and informative and we don't think we would have found the stable…”
